Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

The industrial sharing webinar for BiOn Undergraduate Students, led by alumnae Mr. Angga Athoriq, L&D Director and Marriot International’s L&D Chairman KSA, aims to provide valuable insights into Emotional Intelligence (EI) in leadership, which is crucial for both personal and professional development. The session will begin with an introduction to Marriot International, highlighting its strong presence in the global hospitality industry. This will serve as an example of effective leadership in a diverse and customer-centric organization, showcasing how EI plays a role in building trust and driving performance. Mr. Angga will share practical insights into how emotional intelligence has been a key factor in the success of Marriot International’s leadership strategies.

The webinar about Emotional Intelligence, emphasizing its importance in recognizing and managing one’s emotions, as well as understanding and influencing others’ emotions. Students will learn that EI is a dynamic skill that continuously evolves, underscoring the need for ongoing development in their careers. Mr. Angga will then focus on the role of EI in leadership, demonstrating how it helps leaders inspire teams, manage challenges, and foster a collaborative environment. By combining technical skills with emotional awareness, leaders can make better decisions and enhance communication within teams.
The four core competencies of EI—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management—will be explored in detail. Mr. Angga provides real-world examples from his experience at Marriot International, illustrating how these competencies can be applied effectively in leadership. Participants will also engage in activities to identify their EI strengths and areas for improvement, providing an interactive learning experience.

To strengthen EI, Mr. Angga offers practical tips such as journaling to reflect on emotional responses, undergoing 360° feedback for self-assessment, practicing active listening, and pursuing further training through workshops or online courses. These strategies will empower students to enhance their emotional intelligence, equipping them with the skills needed to lead effectively in their future careers. Finally, the Q&A session will offer an opportunity for students to engage directly with Mr. Angga, allowing for personalized insights and deeper discussions on applying EI in real-world leadership roles.
